Susan and Bill Firestone: Leading a Jewish Life

Susan and Bill Firestone’s decision to name The Center for Jewish Life’s Aron HaKodesh is a perfect reflection of their commitment to Judaism. Just as Judaism is at the heart of the Firestones’ life, the Ark will be the heart of The Center’s sanctuary. Susan explained, “The Ark is the symbol of the fact that Bill and I are committed to Jewish life and that we are committed to the Center, which will enhance Jewish life for everyone in Central Miami.”

Susan and Bill are snowbirds from Massachusetts who started as out-of-town members of Beth David Congregation, and then became regular members in order to be able to contribute more to the community.

“I love shul,” explained Susan, “Being part of the religious aspect of The Center is important to me, and the Torah procession is a high point of the service.”

Susan realized how central this part of services was to her at the beginning of Covid, when her Massachusetts synagogue stopped taking the Torah out because they didn’t know whether either touching the Torahs or holding the processions was safe. “After months of having the Ark closed, it was so dramatic to have the Ark opened, and to actually see the Torah. I had really missed that.”

But the Firestones’ contribution isn’t just about the Ark. They are excited that the Beth David community is going to be able to enhance and expand opportunities for all of us to lead a Jewish life, starting with increasing opportunities for children to attend Jewish day school, and facilitating lifelong Jewish learning. “We are very excited that our gift will go towards making this happen.”

Susan serves on The Center for Jewish Life’s Building Committee and Communications Committee. Bill and Susan are members of the Funders Council of The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning and Susan is on the board. Susan also oversaw the redesign of the sanctuary at Temple Beth El, their synagogue in Springfield, Massachusetts.
